Style your Trad Tunes [Winter 2025]

You're no stranger to Irish traditional music, and are feeling pretty comfortable about getting the notes under your fingers. But you and I both know that playing Irish fiddle music like... well... an Irish fiddler, isn't really about playing and memorizing notes you see on a page.

Some folks call it playing with lilt. Others refer to it as the elusive nya

It's that characteristic sound that makes an Irish fiddle player sound like they're playing Irish fiddle music.

And the reason it's so elusive and hard to define is that there really isn't one correct end-all-be-all way to play Irish music. Martin Hayes, Liz Carroll, and Matt Cranitch are all highly skilled fiddlers that would each be associated with Irish music -- and yet their individual styles are so different when you listen to them!

That's where this workshop course comes in, my friend!

I do believe we each have the capacity to be our own Martins and Lizzes and Matts of Irish music. We can have a healthy appreciation for this music as it is and as it has been, while inserting bits of our personality into these tunes to truly make them our own.

It's one thing to say this is possible, and another thing entirely to put in the work to make that possibility a reality.

Which is why I'm introducing this new course experience where you'll get the opportunity to explore what your style is, and receive real time feedback from your peers and instructor in the process!

We'll be meeting live over Zoom one hour every week for a period of 6 weeks to look at specific tunes and trad players you enjoy while brainstorming and trying out different ways you can style those tunes.

You can get so many amazing ideas and approaches to one tune in a collaborative effort with a group!

And if you're not sure where to start, what to be listening for, or what ornament makes sense to go where -- then this is the course that will give you those ideas.

We're talking about things like realizing "Oh, I've never tried putting a double stop on this note, but it sounds sooo cool! Now I'm going to be listening for other players who do that!"

Or "I couldn't figure out what makes this fiddler have such a powerhouse sound. Now I know what they're doing, and how I can work on doing this myself!"

What's Included in Style your Trad Tunes:

  • 6 live one-hour group calls hosted on Zoom on Tuesdays at 7pm EST (February 18th thru March 25th)
  • Private community to share ideas and inspiration/connect with your fellow course participants

Heads up! This is the first time I am running this course, and as long as there's enough interest will plan to offer multiple cohorts throughout the year. In order for this course to run, I will need a minimum of 4 participants.

If the course is called off due to low enrollment, you will have the option to either receive a full refund or credit your purchase to a total of 6 30 minute lessons OR 3 1 hour lessons with me.

Style your Trad Tunes [Winter 2025] Group Forum

Week 1: Identify what You're Listening to

Ever wonder what exactly a fiddler is doing to achieve a certain sound or effect in the recordings you listen to? We're finding that out this week!

Week 2: All About Textures

This week's exploration covers tone, and discovering the wide varieties of tone you can bring to your playing to create excitement and reflect your personality.

Week 3: Bowing 1

We'll go over some common bow patterns that you can use throughout different tune types.

Week 4: Bowing 2

We won't be able to cover all things bowing in one week, so this week we'll be focused on bowing versatility (aka not getting stuck if you don't play the down beat on a down bow).

Unlock a bonus resource!

Week 5: Ornaments

We'll be less focused on what each of the different ornaments are (though we can certainly do a quick review) and more on where to strategically put them in your tunes so as to not disrupt the rhythm and phrasing!

Week 6: Variations

In our last week together, we'll take all that we've learned about listening, textures, bowing, and ornaments and use this to open up ideas on what your personal style is + how you can continue developing it!
