New Free Training Available: How to get away from the page and learn your tunes by ear. Snag it here!
You're no stranger to Irish traditional music, and are feeling pretty comfortable about getting the notes under your fingers. But you and I both know that playing Irish fiddle music like... well... an Irish fiddler, isn't really about playing and memorizing notes you see on a page.
Some folks call it playing with lilt. Others refer to it as the elusive nya.
It's that characteristic sound that makes an Irish fiddle player sound like they're playing Irish fiddle music.
And the reason it's so elusive and hard to define is that there really isn't one correct end-all-be-all way to play Irish music. Martin Hayes, Liz Carroll, and Matt Cranitch are all highly skilled fiddlers that would each be associated with Irish music -- and yet their individual styles are so different when you listen to them!
That's where this membership comes in, my friend!
I do believe we each have the capacity to be our own Martins and Lizzes and Matts of Irish music. We can have a healthy appreciation for this music as it is and as it has been, while inserting bits of our personality into these tunes to truly make them our own.
Which is why I'm introducing this new membership where you'll get the opportunity to explore what your style is, and develop habits to help you make good choices on what bowing, ornamentation and variation to use in your tunes.
Each month, you'll get a new tune split into 4 lessons: listening, bowing, ornamenting + varying. You can go through these lessons at your own pace (I suggest focusing on one a week), and use these to guide your practice.
In the basic membership you get one pre-selected tune a month (with opportunities to vote for next month's tune type). In the VIP membership, you can send me up to 4 tunes you specifically want to work on each month and I will write in suggested bowing patterns for you.
There aren't a ton of tutorial videos or new content to consume each month because I'd rather you spend the time with your instrument putting these concepts into practice!
You'll also get access to a private community of amazing fellow fiddlers like yourself to share ideas, questions and experiences as you each explore what style and "the real feel" for Irish traditional music means to you.
You can get so many amazing ideas and approaches to one tune in a collaborative effort with a group!
And if you're not sure where to start, what to be listening for, or what ornament makes sense to go where -- then this is the membership that will give you those ideas.
We're talking about things like realizing "Oh, I've never tried putting a double stop on this note, but it sounds sooo cool! Now I'm going to be listening for other players who do that!"
Or "I couldn't figure out what makes this fiddler have such a powerhouse sound. Now I know what they're doing, and how I can work on doing this myself!"
